Nottingham Regatta 3/4 May O8

After the unpredictable weather in April, weather for the May regatta was perfect, warm, sunny and still both days, which led to some exciting racing.

It's a long report this month as we have quite a few club paddlers now across many classes.

Boys A

Oliver Gibson finished 7th in the K1 500m Final 1 in a time of 1.55.93 and won the K1 Final 2 in the 1000m. Jack Staddon finished 3rd in the K1 500m Final 2 and came 8th in Final 1 in the K1 1000m. Jack teamed up with Stephen Dixon for the K2 races and finished 6th in the 500m final and 4th in the 1000m. Oliver teamed up with Mark Childerstone from Wey K.C. for the 500m K2 and finished 3rd and he paddled with Tom Simmons from Bradford on Avon for the 1000m and finished 2nd.

Boys B

Alex Foster did very well to reach Final 1 in both the K1 500m and 1000m, finishing 8th in the 500m and 7th in the 1000m.

Boys C

Guy Standeven was promoted at the April regatta and did well to reach Final 2 in both the K1 events, coming 3rd in his 1000m heat in a time of 4.47.12.

Boys D

Ben Finnis reached Final 1 in both the K1 500m and 1000m, coming 5th in the 500m and 6th in the 1000m. Fraser Blackman, racing for the first time at Nottingham, fought extremely well to finish 1st in the K1 500m Final 3, winning by 0.4 of a second. Joe Finnis finished 7th in both his K1 heats.

Girls B

Sarah Beer finished 9th in the K1 500m Final 1 and 4th in Final 2 of the K1 1000m. Sarah then teamed up with Laura Ferguson from Banbury C.C for the K2 500m and finished 4th in the K2 500m final and she raced with Katie Williams from Elmbridge for the 1000m K2, winning their heat and coming 5th in the final.

Girls D

Grace Farrington did really well in her K1, finishing 4th in the 500m Final 1 and 3rd in the 1000m Final 1 and was promoted to Girls C. Well done, Grace!

Emma Beer was 7th in the K1 500m Final 1 and won Final 2 in the 1000m. Rebecca Vorley finished 6th in Final 2 in the K1 500m and 7th in the 1000m Final 2. Gemma Ruff did well to win the K1 1000m Final 3 by 5 seconds. Grace and Emma raced the K2 500m together and came 6th in Final 1. Gemma teamed up with Nicole Williams and finished a good second in the K2 500m Final 2. Rebecca teamed up with Jana Adler and came 3rd in the K2 1000m. Rebecca also managed to get a place in a composite K4 for the 500m final and came away with a 2nd place. The Royal K4 of Grace, Emma, Gemma and Nicole raced a good 1000m and finished 3rd.

Mens A

Jonathan Boyton won his K1 500m heat in 1.48.02 and came 6th in Final 1. Stuart Hastings won Final 2 in 1.48.39 with Chris Sears in 5th place. In the K1 1000m both Jonny and Stuart reached Final 1 with Jonny finishing 3rd in 3.41.98 and Stuart 4th in 3.43.24. Chris came 2nd in Final 2. Jonny was also involved in the crew boat events racing as part of the ORS team. The most exciting of these was the K4 500m final where he paddled with Rob Beer (Elm), Ben Haynes (L. Buzz) and Kristian Reeves (Add). Their boat was pipped into 3rd place by only one hundredth of a second!

Mens B

Bob Poole won his heat in the K1 500m and finished 2nd in Final 1 in 1.54.71. Bob also came 2nd in the K1 1000m in 3.55.71.

Masters C

Mike Foster was promoted at the last regatta and finished 7th in the K1 1000m final.

Womens A

Although still a junior, Jess Walker raced in Womens A and did really well to finish 2nd in the K1 500m final in 1.57.20.

Jess then teamed up with Anna Hemmings (Elm) for the K2 500m, as part of the ORS team and won the final by over 2 seconds in 1.50.58.

Jess and Anna then raced in a K4 with Hayley Mason (Nott) and Rachel Cawthorn (Wey) and won the 500m final. Jess was rewarded for her efforts by being selected to compete in the European Championships in Milan taking place from 15th to 18th May.

Lightnings

Our Lightning paddlers were Daniel Vorley, Laura Ruff, who had both raced at Nottingham before, and our first-timers were Molly Dickinson, Janeke Venema Osborne, Isaac Blackman and sister Margot.

In the Mini K4 races, Daniel and Isaac teamed up with 2 paddlers from Elmbridge and won both the 500m and 1000m finals. The girls made up another K4 and finished 7th and 6th respectively.

Under 10

In the Girls U10 K1 500m final Margot did very well to finish 2nd. Under 12 All our paddlers raced in the same K1 500m final with Isaac finishing 1st, Daniel 2nd, Janeke 5th, Molly 6th, Laura 7th.

In the K2 500m, Isaac and Daniel finished 7th, Molly and Janeke were 8th and Laura and Margot were 10th. In the K2 1000m, Isaac and Daniel finished 4th, Molly and Janeke were 9th with Laura and Margot 11th.

Well done to everyone taking part. The next regatta takes place on 7th/8th June.
